A team at the University of Karlsruhe, Germany, is developing a human-sized machine that can lightly hold a person's forearm and steer them in the appropriate direction.
If the person starts to wriggle, the robot quickly releases its hold.
The work was presented at the Humanoids 2008 conference in Daejeon, South Korea, last month.
